9 safety tips when using your gas appliances

Category General News

There's so much to love about gas-powered appliances. You can have a hot shower even during loadshedding. Gas-powered stoves make the best meals thanks to their even heat distribution. And you can save considering the rising costs of electricity. Gas is a clean, efficient, and even safe fuel source for your home. Provided you follow these simple safety measures, you can enjoy it without any worries.

1. Get a gas compliance certificate

According to local Pressure Equipment Regulations, any gas installations on your property must have a Certificate of Conformity. This is very important if you're letting out or buying property, or insuring your premises. During the certifying process, a trained professional will check to see if your gas set-up and installation are done correctly.

2. Service your gas installation annually

With regular upkeep of your gas installation, you can ensure you won't have any issues in the future. During a visit, your service provider will check if your installation is free from leaks, verify the equipment used is SABS approved, check that correct valves are being used, ensure gas equipment is placed in the right positions, and make any repairs as required. This is precision work, so make sure your chosen technician is qualified and accredited. You can search for their details on SAQCC Gas to confirm they are registered and authorised to work on gas systems.

3. Use appliances as recommended

Your appliance's instruction manual may not be the most engaging read. However, it's important to get acquainted with best use and care practices. Also, avoid tampering with how they work and use them only as advised by the manufacturer. For example, avoid using your stove to heat up your home as this could start a fire.

4. Check appliances for gas leaks

Faulty or damaged gas appliances can show signs of a gas leak. A good safety tip is to check for lights going out, black-stained appliances, increased condensation, and a slow yellow or orange flame as opposed to a blue one. A hissing or whistling sound is also a potential sign gas could be escaping a loose connection.

5. Know the warning signs of a gas poisoning

Carbon monoxide is a clear and odourless gas. So, it can be tough to pinpoint signs of exposure. Look out for these symptoms in your family members: dizziness, chest pain, headaches, breathlessness, nausea, and drowsiness. You may also notice plants near gas appliances withering. If you have any suspicions, you should consult a professional to evaluate the situation.

6. Install a carbon monoxide alarm

If you have a gas stove, installing a carbon monoxide detector is well worth the cost. These devices will make an audible sound if they sense the presence of a gas leak. Always ensure these have working batteries as they could save a life. If they do beep, remain calm, turn off your appliance, increase ventilation in your room, and call a gas safety professional.

7. Refill gas cylinders with care

On the way to refill gas, always ensure the valve is tightly closed on the cylinder and the regulator is removed before you transport it. The gas container should be kept upright during the trip. The same rules apply when you're bringing your filled container home. You should ensure you buy gas from an authorised dealer/supplier.

8. Educate children about gas appliances

Small children should be kept away from gas appliances and must never be left alone in these rooms without supervision. They may be tempted to play with buttons and dials, unintentionally starting a fire. By educating them about the danger, you can ensure your home remains a harmonious environment. Older teens who may assist with cooking and household chores involving these appliances should be educated on safety and ways to spot a leak.

9. Be prepared for an emergency

Everyone in the household should know how to deal with a gas leak. The gas should be turned off immediately, appliances should be switched off, and no fires should be started near the appliance. The room should be ventilated by opening windows and doors. In the case of a fire, there should be easy access to fire extinguishers and the number of the local fire department.
