Get festive with these Christmas table decor ideas

Category General News

During the holiday season, your table takes the spotlight. It's the place where the family gathers for cups of creamy eggnog, juicy roasts, and sizzling sosaties straight off the braai. As you break out the Christmas tree, switch on Mariah's famous tune (you know the one), and dust off your stockings, don't forget about your table. Here are some ideas to give your setting a festive makeover.

1. Make Santa's nice list with plaid

With their typically Christmas colours, plaid and tartan fabrics are easy ways to conjure up a festive feel. These can be mixed into tablecloths, napkins, or decor items. The pattern can be overwhelming so stick to using colours found within the patterns in your design scheme or pair them with neutral shades.

2. Sleigh the season with pine cones

These barbed beauties add dimension and earthiness to your table setting. Stack them in a basket, fill them in jars, or scatter them across the table - their versatility knows no bounds. For an extra oomph, paint your pine cones or soak them in bleach to give them a just-out-of-the-snow wintery feel.

3. 'Tis the time for rustic chic

Your table should feel approachable and unpretentious. And nothing says as much as a rustic table decor theme. Think bare wooden surfaces, hessian table runners, branches, and pine sprigs. It's a look that will take your guests back to simpler times.

4. Deck the plates with festive napkins

The first item people touch on your table will have everyone falalaling with joy. Impress them with bold colours, unusual patterns, or festive folds like trees, stars, or elf hats. Simply google a tutorial to learn the shapes you want to make. For a special touch, you can also tie up your napkins with dried orange slices, pine sprigs, or candy canes.

5. Add a bow for a ho-ho-hot look

Everyone loves presents and you can evoke the feeling of excitement they give with some well-placed bows. Tie them to the backs of chairs, twist them around decor items, or twirl them around your cutlery to delight your guests.

6. Sneak in scents for the holiday spirit

A sensational smell will also set the mood at your Christmas table. Another decor idea is to add cinnamon sticks and lemons to your decor or make a garland centrepiece from mint leaves. Scented candles or reed diffusers with holiday smells like gingerbread or pine will also do the trick.

7. Dash through the glow with wine glass candle holders

Using wine glasses as candle holders can save the day if you need extra table lighting. Simply pop candles in and light them up. For a striking look, you can use different candle lengths. Another decor idea is to turn the wine glass upside down and use the stem base as a stand for your candle. Round off the look by adding a bow to the stem.

8. Bring joy to the world with wreaths

Wreathes give festive vibes at the front door, but who stays they have to stay there? You can invite this fair foliage to your table. Add them to chairs, make them part of your centrepiece, or display mini wreaths on plates. The latter design idea can be complemented with name tags to make each guest feel like a winner.

9. Make it 'snow' fabulous with fairy lights

These twinkling lights can create a beautiful atmosphere beyond just adorning your Christmas tree. For your table setting, string them on chairs, add them to bottles and vases, or create a fake fire in your hearth. The possibilities are as endless.

10. Rejoice in unusual colour choices

Shades of red and green are the traditional colour palette for Christmas. But, you can aim to be adventurous. Opt for gold and silver for a luxurious feel, use shades of pink for a delicate look, or choose icy-blue shades to delight children with a Frozen-themed table.

11. Wrap up the setting with presents

Party favours can help you secure the host of the year title. For a festive twist, wrap them up in mini present boxes. These make wonderful decor accents and provide pleasure when guests unwrap them and discover chocolates, cookies, bath bombs, or toys.

12. Find peace on earth outside

Your location will also complement your table decor. Staying indoors in front of your gloriously decked tree is perfectly lovely. However, alfresco dining can help you embrace the beauty of the outdoors. The fresh air, sounds of nature, and space to move around can be a welcome change for your guests.
