Want to give back? Here are Mbombela charities who need your help

Category General News

Giving back is one of the most meaningful ways to make a difference, and in Mbombela (Nelspruit), there are plenty of opportunities to do just that. Whether you want to support disadvantaged children, uplift local communities, or protect the environment, you'll find incredible charities making a real impact. By offering your time, resources, or even just a helping hand, you can play a vital role in creating positive change. If you're looking for ways to chip in, here's a list of Mbombela charities and non-profits where your generosity will truly matter.

Ministry on Wheels

This faith-based non-profit is dedicated to helping those in need. It distributes weekly food parcels, clothing, furniture, and household items, and provides emotional and spiritual support. It is passionate about serving the community and is a supporter of retirement homes, community nursery schools, feeding schemes in rural areas, churches, women and children shelters, and disability centres.

SOS Children's Village Nelspruit

This non-profit organisation provides a lifeline for vulnerable children, young people, and families in Mbombela. When people move to the city, they can struggle to find decent jobs and often end up in difficult circumstances. The SOS Children's Village Nelspruit steps in by providing nurturing and development of children and youth through family-based care and the Family Strengthening Programme.

Nelspruit Hospice

Thanks to this organisation, people with life-threatening illnesses can get access to quality home-based palliative care. Patients and their families can seek the services of an interdisciplinary team, which includes medical, psychological, psycho-social, and spiritual care. It also has a Hospice Bereavement Support Group, which supports adults who have lost a loved one.

Child Welfare SA Nelspruit

Established in 1937, Child Welfare SA Nelspruit has an exceptional history of offering social work services to children between the ages of 0-18 years. Their heroic actions have bettered the lives of vulnerable and at-risk youth who are impacted by abuse, neglect, social exploitation, abandonment, orphanhood, domestic violence, crime, chronic illness, and other challenges.

Guardian Angels

This collection of enthusiastic volunteers - both men and women - get together and visit the elderly or sick in their communities in Mbombela. These individuals are often neglected or rejected and Guardian Angels bring some much-needed love and sunshine to their daily lives. It can include transporting them, running shopping errands, celebrating a holiday, or providing a necessity.

Nelspruit SPCA

With a near-five-star rating on Google, this local SPCA branch has played a stellar role in protecting all animals from cruelty, neglect, and ill-treatment. Within the community, it helps sterilise animals, find lost pets, provide adoption services, and perform outreach programmes aimed at preventing animal abuse and educating owners on animal care.

CANSA Care Centre Lowveld

CANSA is a non-profit on a mission to help fight cancer, enable cancer reach, educate the public, and advocate for and support all people affected by cancer. Their regional branch in Mbombela brings their activism to the local community and provides a vital support group for those impacted by cancer in the Lowveld region.

Charity Begins at Home Lowveld

A deep passion for the people and animals of the Lowveld brought together this determined group of volunteers. And their impact on the region has been immeasurable. They make a difference by either helping directly or supporting an existing charity that champions babies and children, families, the elderly, animals, the arts, or local facilities.

We CARE 4 Nelspruit

Mbombela is a better place thanks to the actions of this non-profit. They work and advocate for a cleaner, safer, beautified, and investment-friendly city. Some highlights have included cleaning up important roads like KaMagugu and Kaapsehoop and public spaces during the holidays and after the festive season. With their help, they have ensured Mbombela remains a popular tourist destination as well as preventing property values from falling.

Nelspruit Community Forum

The Nelspruit Community Forum was launched in 2004 to help the marginalised and destitute in the city and assist them in becoming functional members of society. Their services provide basic human needs, psycho-social needs, practical life skills, spiritual needs, personal development, work skills and training, and job opportunities.

Pro Life Pet Rescue

Pro Life Pet Rescue is a rehabilitation and adoption agency for animals in and around Mbombela. In the spirit of its name, the agency has a strict no-euthanasia policy for healthy animals and believes that all deserve a second chance. They are well-known for helping find forever homes for abandoned, mistreated, lost, or less fortunate pets.

Chimp Eden

If you travel just 15 km outside Mbombela, you'll find the wonderful Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) South Africa Chimpanzee Sanctuary at the Umhloti Nature Reserve. Known simply as "Chimp Eden", it provides a home to chimpanzees that have been displaced from their natural habitats in Africa. Often rescued from traumatic circumstances, these chimps can live in a risk-free, semi-wild environment with treatment (where required) and interactions with other group members.

Grace Baby Haven

Started in 2021, Grace Baby Haven cares for abused and abandoned babies, from newborns to four years old. The non-profit has been relentless in its efforts and through a combination of love, care, and shelter, it has offered these vulnerable infants a chance to have a brighter future. Careful attention is paid to their physical, emotional, and developmental well-being for a successful transition to foster homes or adoptive families.
